Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET) Celebrates 66th Annual Day

Indian Railways Institute of Signal Engineering & Telecommunications (IRISET), located in Tarnaka, Secunderabad, is one of the eight Centralized Training Institutes of Indian Railways specialized in imparting training on Railway Signalling & Telecommunication Systems. The training imparted by IRISET plays a unique role in shaping the Railway Signalling & Telecommunication Engineers. The USP of this Institute is it houses all varieties of Signalling & Telecommunication systems in working order under single roof. The Institute completed 66 years of existence on 24th November, 2023.

The Annual Day of the Institute was scheduled to be held on 26th November, 2023. Key note address from eminent personality, address by the top management, distribution of awards to meritorious trainees and release of Technical Magazine will form part of the Annual day event. The attendees in the function include faculty & staff of the institute, trainees, dignitaries from Ministry of Railways and representatives from Industry & Zonal Railways and media.

The Institute trains the new recruits into the system either through UPSC or RRB selections. The Initial training spanning around six months lays emphasis on the fundamentals of Railway Signalling, Safety in Train operations and hands-on exposure in the Laboratories. The Signal & Telecommunication Supervisors inducted into the Indian Railway System are mandated to undergo Refresher courses at a periodicity of every four years. During the Refresher course training, the latest developments in technology and review of safety protocols in train working would be emphasized. The Institute also conducts specialized training on customized content with reference to different technologies and systems available.

The Institute has well furnished classrooms and hostel accommodation within the campus to train around 500 students. The Institute has 13 Laboratories in different streams like Outdoor Signalling, Train Detection, Electrical Signalling, Train Protection Systems, Block Signalling, Telephony, Networking etc. National Knowledge Network (NKN) connectivity with 100Mbps bandwidth is available in the Institute to access knowledge repository and large number of technical and research books. The Institute has developed large number of Learning Resources in the form of Technical write-ups and Videos of Classroom sessions and uploaded them on a common shared Digital Repository accessible to all the trainees and Zonal Railway Training Institutes.

The Executives of Public Sector undertakings like Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) & Railtel Corporation of India Limited (RCIL) and representatives of Metro Railways are also trained in the Institute. The Institute had the distinction of training 332 Foreign National Trainees from the countries like Malaysia, South Korea, Philippines etc. on Railway Signalling. On an average 5170 officers and supervisors are trained at the Institute in a year. So far, IRISET has trained 1,07,671 Railway personnel since its inception. In the year 2022, Centre of Excellence (CoE) was established in the Institute to carry out research work on Kavach-Indian Railways Automatic Train Protection Systems.
