In response to rising temperatures and heatwave warnings from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Ministry of Ayush has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to educate citizens on heatwave prevention. This initiative is being implemented through various Ayush institutions across the country, focusing on preventive measures to safeguard public health during extreme heat conditions.
On March 20, 2025, the Jamnagar-based Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) held an awareness drive to educate the local population, especially visitors to its Outpatient Department (OPD), on preventing heat-related illnesses. Educational pamphlets, providing practical tips on hydration, avoiding peak sunlight, and recognizing heat stress symptoms, were distributed. The program aimed to equip people with essential knowledge to combat heatwaves effectively.
In Ahmedabad, Dr. Jayprakash Ram led a lecture on Heatwave Awareness at RARI Ahmedabad, emphasizing knowledge, prevention, and treatment strategies. Patients and their families participated in discussions, learning valuable tips for managing the risks of heat stress.
Dr. Preeti from the Central Research Institute of Yoga & Naturopathy in Jhajjar conducted a session combining heatwave prevention with the healing benefits of Yoga and Naturopathy, highlighting natural remedies for staying cool.
A public health advisory from the Ayush Vertical also outlined key precautions:
- Stay hydrated with water, coconut water, and fruit juices.
- Avoid direct sunlight during peak hours (12:00 PM - 3:00 PM).
- Eat light meals and wear loose, cotton clothing.
- Use cooling drinks and apply cooling pastes like sandalwood.
This campaign offers vital resources to protect the public from the adverse effects of heatwaves, ensuring a safe summer season.
